A call for manners in the world of nasty blogs

Is it too late to bring civility to the web?

The New York Times considers the conversational free-for-all on the Internet known as the blogosphere as a prickly and unpleasant place, sometimes.

It continues by saying menacing behavior is certainly not unique to the Internet. But since the Web offers the option of anonymity with no accountability, online conversations are often more prone to decay into ugliness than those in other media.

We've had our share of ugliness on the "Naija scene", the sudden attack on overwhelmed and "yellow paw paw", I must say it was really weird to see all that hate being spewed without knowing who to hold accountable.I think just as in reality we often "leave" or "close our ears" to such venom, it is right for the blogger to delete comments that he/she feels are not acceptable on the blog. I think people should stand up for their opinions, after all, majority of us are already "anonymous" behind our different blogs. Very few use their true identities, so being "anonymous" behind "anonymous" is just being a coward.

The article makes a fine point. There's one thing to try and not promote censorship and its another to protect yourself from hecklers and naysayers who refuse to put some sort of identity however "anonymous" asa reference to pinpoint. Assholes. I've already resorted to some of the measures mention like making one of my blogs private and removing anonymous commenting on the others.

Thanks for sharing.

I guess this explains why most people blog anonymously...it can be pretty scary to receive death threats!!!
Plus, I think some people take things too personally especially things they should overlook and move on. No matter how passionate you feel about something, it just does not make sense at all to threaten to take another life.

hmmmm
is it ppl being unnecessarily nasty or is it ppl being real
i mean we put on our masks and go about our days but on the internet they can be real and say what they want.
I am still not sure if this is good or bad tho?
I mean if that is there outlet, what's the harm?

had read waffarian, noni and jola and thought no need to comment.

But Kafo, some people on the internet are really vitriolic. There should be some form of control. Sometimes the aount of hate they spew is unpardonable.

Thanx for stopping by,Kafo
